An animation by Joanna Layla and Lizzy Rowlatt commissioned by

I N A   S H A I

in celebration of the TREE CHARTER

in collaboration with THE WOODLAND TRUST and LYRIX ORGANIX.

The brief was to design, create and animate a hand-drawn line and watercolour music video within a month, base on a narrative entitled ‘Lonely Tree’ bout how one man (and a pigeon) transform an urban wasteland into a thriving green space.

The animation can be seen here on the Woodland Trust website

The animation will be debuted in full at the HAY FESTIVAL 2017.

Below is a selection of frames from the animation.

In designing the illustrations for the video I was inspired by lines from TS ELIOT’s The Wasteland:

What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,
You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
There is shadow under this red rock,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.
