Illustrator. Penciller. Drawn to beautiful things, drawn to the beautiful in everyday things.
Joanna Layla graduated with first class honours in English Language and Literature – the linguistic training sparking her interest in visual communication and developing her own visual language to illustrate a world of words.
The curiosity to trace the line of her pencil through different cultures has taken her to India, East Europe, East Africa, Haiti, Cuba and most recently China and SE Asia. Each new location translated into a kaleidoscope of drawings, journals and series of limited edition prints. Each image embodying the story of its composition.
With each new project, she embraces the flexibility of her discipline, challenging her own illustration practice. She has recently worked on commissions as diverse as creating interactive illustrations for the new digital play space at the Lyric Hammersmith, designing illustrations on silk for an Amaka capsule collection, illustrated live with Penguin Children’s Authors, created limited edition album artwork for artists including K.Anderson, illustrated set for National Theatre and Cardboard Citizen productions and created illustrations for brands such as The White Company. She has just been commissioned to create the illustrations for a short film.
Joanna Layla combines this illustration practice with commissioned work and exhibitions (most recently exhibitions in Shoreditch London and Austin Texas), tutoring illustration at Central Saint Martins and leading visual art workshops as artist-in-residence with Lyrix Organix.
